What to check on a used-car test drive

Plan a safe test drive and turn observations into useful questions.

ARM Cars editorial guide · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Agree the arrangements

Confirm permission, insurance and who may drive. Adjust the seat and mirrors and find the lights, demister and parking brake before moving. Choose a suitable legal route with the seller; do not use a public road to test extreme braking or speed.

Notice normal behaviour

Observe starting, gear changes, steering feel and braking during ordinary driving. Listen for unusual sounds and note when they occur. Ask a passenger to take notes so you can concentrate. A short drive cannot establish long-term mechanical reliability.

Discuss findings afterwards

Park safely before reviewing warnings or recording symptoms. Tell the independent inspector what you noticed. If braking, steering or another critical function feels unsafe, stop in a safe place and contact the seller rather than continuing the test.

Official information and further reading

Requirements can change. Check the linked authority before completing paperwork or relying on a driving entitlement.

General information, not a vehicle inspection or confirmation of stock. Budget examples are planning figures. Current prices and availability must be confirmed.
