Tourist guide to buying a cheap car in NZ

Plan a budget purchase, paperwork and a realistic exit plan for your visit.

ARM Cars editorial guide · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Work backwards from your trip

List arrival and departure dates, passengers and luggage. Allow time for inspections at the start and selling at the end. Compare buying with renting for your trip length. Neither a resale price nor a quick sale is guaranteed. NZ$2,000–NZ$4,000 are enquiry budgets, not promised stock.

Arrange paperwork before collection

Visitors without a New Zealand driver licence cannot use the standard online buyer-notification transaction. NZTA directs those buyers to an agent. Check acceptable identification and address requirements before travelling to the agent. Buying a vehicle and being entitled to drive it are separate matters.

Plan your exit

Keep maintenance records and receipts, and allow time to answer buyers’ questions. Do not rely on a guaranteed buy-back: ARM Cars has not offered one. Confirm insurance and breakdown arrangements before leaving on a long journey.

Official information and further reading

Requirements can change. Check the linked authority before completing paperwork or relying on a driving entitlement.

General information, not a vehicle inspection or confirmation of stock. Budget examples are planning figures. Current prices and availability must be confirmed.
