Check the rule for your arrival
The overseas car-licence allowance changed from 1 November 2026. NZTA describes a 12-month limit for the new rule. Transitional provisions can preserve up to 18 months for arrivals between 1 November 2024 and 31 October 2026. Confirm your exact circumstances with NZTA instead of relying on older travel articles.
Carry the right documents
Meet NZTA’s conditions, including a current valid licence. If it is not in English, carry the required translation or international driving permit with the licence. Purchasing a vehicle does not extend driving entitlement.
Prepare for the first drive
Read the NZ road rules and become familiar with the controls before departure. Plan a short journey after rest, rather than a long drive after an international flight. Tell your insurer which licence you hold and confirm cover.
