Seat belts, phones and speed: everyday NZ precautions

Set up the journey so basic safety does not depend on last-minute decisions.

ARM Cars editorial guide · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Buckle up before departure

Use appropriate seat belts and approved child restraints. Check the current age-specific child-restraint rules and follow the restraint and vehicle instructions. A seat should fit the child and be correctly installed, not simply be present in the vehicle.

Put the phone away

Set navigation before departure. Handheld phone use while driving is restricted by law; a hands-free setup does not remove distraction. For non-urgent changes or messages, park safely first. Read the official rule for precise permitted use and exceptions.

Choose a safe speed

Stay within the applicable posted limit and slow further for conditions. Do not assume the same limit continues through roadworks or a settlement. Weather, bends, pedestrians and poor visibility can make a legal maximum unsafe.

Official information and further reading

Requirements can change. Check the linked authority before completing paperwork or relying on a driving entitlement.
