ARM Cars editorial guide · Reviewed 3 November 2026
Identify the vehicle category first
NZTA publishes specific guidance for agricultural vehicles and forklifts. Start with the actual vehicle category, intended use and route; do not assume a vehicle is exempt from normal requirements simply because it is used on a farm. Ask NZTA or an appropriate inspection provider if the classification is unclear.
Check the requirements together
Before travel, confirm the applicable driver licence, registration and licensing, inspection, lighting and visibility requirements. Also check any conditions affecting speed, dimensions, loads or trailers. The relevant combination depends on the machine and its use. This page deliberately does not offer a blanket exemption or a substitute for the current official guidance.
Keep repair work separate from certification
A mechanical repair and approval for road use are different matters. Ask who is authorised to carry out any required inspection or certification. ARM Cars accepts repair enquiries but this guide does not claim that Raj is an authorised WoF or CoF inspector. Confirm the inspection provider before planning the journey.
Resolve uncertainty before moving
Have the make, model, registration or serial number and intended route available when asking for advice. If you cannot establish that the vehicle can be moved safely and legally, discuss suitable transport rather than driving it to find out. Raj can discuss the repair; the relevant authority or authorised provider must confirm regulatory questions.
