Plan before fatigue arrives
Start rested and allow more time than the navigation estimate. Plan breaks and an overnight stop where appropriate. Discuss who will drive and confirm each driver is licensed and insured. A long flight followed by a long drive is a poor combination.
Recognise the warning signs
Repeated yawning, heavy eyes, wandering attention and difficulty recalling the last part of the drive are reasons to act. Do not rely on loud music, an open window or determination to stay safe.
Stop safely
NZTA advises stopping in a safe place when tired rather than continuing. Rest or change to a rested authorised driver. If the itinerary no longer works, change the itinerary rather than trying to recover time by speeding.
