Your first drive in New Zealand: a preparation guide

Prepare your licence, vehicle and route before joining New Zealand traffic.

ARM Cars editorial guide · Reviewed 3 November 2026

Prepare before moving

Confirm your legal driving entitlement, insurance and any licence conditions. Set navigation while parked, adjust the seat and mirrors and find the indicators, lights and demister. Consider professional instruction if unfamiliar with left-side traffic or the vehicle.

Keep left and follow signs

Drive on the left and obey local signs and markings. Recheck your position after turns, stops and quiet-road breaks. Posted limits are maximums, not targets: choose a lower safe speed where visibility, traffic or surface conditions require it.

Make the first journey manageable

Avoid a long first drive after a flight. Choose a short route, allow time and stop safely if confused. This introductory checklist is not a substitute for the official Road Code or driving lessons.

Official information and further reading

Requirements can change. Check the linked authority before completing paperwork or relying on a driving entitlement.

General information, not a vehicle inspection or confirmation of stock. Budget examples are planning figures. Current prices and availability must be confirmed.
